Before the lockdown in India, I was in Ahmedabad in January 2020 and I had the best time of my life. I confirmed the partnership with my CTO Sandeep Mundra, I had fun working with Jigar, Rashmi and Chetan every day in the UI office. Rashmi is such a badass in tech, I love her! She is amazing. And last but not least, I met a new bestie…Shonika. It’s amazing how life can surprise you and find happiness in every little thing. Until now I am keeping the memories in my heart.
How to cope with isolation, depression, and stress during COVID-19?
“Economy is down worldwide, it’s not a systematic issue, the world is put on pause momentarily”, said of my good friend, one of the smartest bankers I know, Eric Magnusson who works in Oil & Gas industry. We were chatting on WhatsApp about the updates of COVID-19 and lockdown in the States.
In today’s crisis regardless of who you are or where you come from we are all self-quarantining or practicing social distancing. No one is exempted and we all are adjusting to a new normal lifestyle caused by coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Everyone reacts differently and I read a lot of negative updates on my Facebook newsfeed about local government and economic anxiety. It looks like many people may experience depression.
I’m no by means a psychologist but as someone who grew up without my parents around (they work overseas since I was young) and I have lived my entire life in a dormitory, I learned how to cope in isolation. So, being alone and doing my things are not unfamiliar situations to me. Allow me to share how to cope with isolation, depression, and stress.
(We read all the hygiene tips everywhere so I will skip on this one).
It is important to eat well because good nutrition can help support a healthy immune system. Before home-quarantine I’ve planned to overeat whilst watching Netflix, haha! It was my guilty pleasure but I’ve thought of the consequences if I will have an unhealthy lifestyle. Hence after consuming my junk foods (lol) I didn’t buy anymore and I started to make meal-preps. I eat small but frequent meals throughout the day to stay energized.
The first few days of self-isolation, I sleep late at 4 in the morning I watched so many crime films on Netflix. I literally finished Narcos in Mexico in just few days. A week later, I feel awful and I’ve thought if I continue to stay up late I will end up with bad insomnia. Hence, to have sleepy hygiene, I attempted to rest early at 10 pm. I’m no longer drinking coffee in the afternoon so I can sleep at night.
Recently, the condo facilities are suspended because the condo management is supporting the implementation of Government Guidelines/advisory in reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission within the estate. The gym is closed and it is challenging for me to workout. I am not a fitness pro who can form six-pack abs by doing sit-ups outdoor. Lol So, I followed hot fitness influencers on YouTube and I work out every morning for 40-minutes.
After my work online, I stay in touch with family and friends. I start video call on Skype, Instagram and Zoom and I feel more connected with them than few years ago. I learned that one of my friends is expecting a baby and two of my mates are actually dating. Haha! There are so many updates to catch up so you should try it too!
How to create an activity during self-isolation?
We all have different ways to relax and express ourselves. Personally, I like to keep active to stay healthy as possible – physically and mentally. So, if you will give me unnecessary stress I will not participate and I will ignore you. Lol My mental health is extremely important to me because when I feel good, I become productive and when I am productive I can leverage my skills and I can make good decisions.
Recently, I build the 2nd version of my pc briefcase. I am inspired by the tech community blogger, so I follow the latest threads on Reddit and read interesting articles on how to build my own computer. 🤓
Before I will share with you how I build the pc briefcase, I will give you a quick tour of my 2nd bedroom.
I'm a big geek kid inside.
I’m a big geek kid inside. On my last trip to Boston, I was able to stop by the gaming shop, I purchased gaming posters. I don’t want to ruin it in my luggage so I made efforts to ship it from the States to Singapore via UPS. Whilst I was on the plane (26-hours flight, by the way) I cannot wait to be home and unbox the package. Lol
Then I set up my gaming room in the bedroom. It was a bad idea because I couldn’t sleep early. Later I removed it outside the room so when I want to sleep, I won’t have any temptations to play a game. 😂
How to keep yourself busy during COVID-19 Self-Isolation?
We all have different activities and I am sure yours are fun and exciting. If you have a YouTube channel, share with me the link so I will subscribe. If you are selling food online, let me know so I can order in Singapore. If you have a webinar class, I will sign-up. Let’s keep ourselves busy and stay productive! What makes me busy recently? I am building my 2nd pc briefcase.
The process of making it is the same as the pc briefcase the only differences are the size of the briefcase is smaller and slimmer, I used heat sink and two extra fans (for cooling), I installed the latest graphics card for gaming and I engineered it 8x better than version 1.0 haha.
What to do whilst making a pc briefcase?
Many of us have imagined that a tech geek is someone overweight, with messy hair, nerdy, socially awkward and weird. This isn’t true at all because when you are tech geek, you are into details, you are meticulous and hence, an OCD.
In my case, I don’t have to wear a large size of t-shirt to look tomboy to be a gamer and I don’t have to have a messy hair to show that I’m a geek. I can be myself (girly-girl) whilst coding and building a pc briefcase because my look doesn’t define my skills. 😉
Before I make the pc briefcase, I make sure I coordinate with my helper to make the meals for my lunch and dinner. She’s fantastic!
The first two nights, she cooked beef stir fry with veggies and Indonesian ayam. She marinated it with curry powder and turmeric it was tasty.
During day and after my work online, I clean the pc briefcase. I don’t know why but it is dusty in my living room maybe due to open balcony facing the condo facilities. I need to constantly clean my pc briefcase and make sure it looks neat. Lol
Then one day my helper was super bored and wanted to make a good meal. I told her she can do whatever she likes just don’t disturb me when I am coding and organizing the processor. Lol She left the house and went to bbq pitt. After an hour she came back with a hot bbq chicken satay. Yum! 😂
Okay, to be continued....
Whilst cleaning and testing the processor I was watching the news. The government announced the circuit breaker. People are confused between lockdown and circuit breaker (don’t worry, you are not alone! Lol) In my understanding, I think the difference is lockdown is more like supported by the military where there is a public curfew. A circuit breaker is more like establishments are closed including offices and schools. Personally, I don’t think Singapore needs to have martial law since Singapore is systematic and most people are following rules. We are all raised, educated or influenced in Singapore to follow the rules for our own good.
So, don’t play play ah. 😂
Then Sumi cooked another delicious meal for us. This time is chicken and sprouts beans with tofu. I like how creative she becomes in the kitchen.
Okay, back to coding and installing...
(press play to watch the videos).
I tested the speakers and monitor if they are working well. It turns out really dope. Haha! I installed two medium size speakers and a 17” monitor.
Someday, I will make my children pc briefcase. Haha! My minions will have their own pc briefcase at home and I will teach them how to message me on Slack or server. They will learn how to code by the time they graduate in K2. 😂😂
A video selfie break and friend duty....
(press play to watch the videos).
That feeling when you are returning to pale skin because you can’t buy spray tan. LOL Sephora shops are closed! Kidding.
The other day, I packed surgical masks 3-ply non-woven fabric (50 pieces each box) to send to my family and dear friends in Singapore, the U.S. and Ireland. I immediately shipped it before the circuit breaker started in Singapore. To those of you that I wasn’t able to give a box of mask that’s because I am also limited of stocks in Singapore. But when I have stocks again at home, I will give away to friends and family.
Preparation for gaming...
It is no secret that I have been preparing to be a “pro video gamer” for Livestream and YouTube. I have built two (2) pc briefcases and I have installed the latest graphics cards making it possible for me to have an advantage in the game. Not to mention, I have been practicing all day for YouTube (after my work of course! Lol). I learned that it is not easy to play shooting games if you use a controller and it is much better if you use a keyboard.
The sad part of self-isolation is being in home quarantine alone I wish I have a date every day at home. 😥 It would have been more fun to wake up in bed next to someone you love, have a coffee together in the morning, cook together, okay maybe Sumi can handle tha cooking situation so disregard it 😂, watch Netflix and talk about fun stuff. Once the COVID-19 is over…I will get out of the house, I will travel to meet my love, I will hug and kiss him and I will tell him that I love him. And whoever he is…I will marry him when the time is right. For now, I will play a video game and I will try to save the world one level at a time.
Thank you for reading and please stay safe, everyone!
